New Home Star Raises $12,000 for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation Through Virtual 5K Race

By Star Report 2 min read

Chicago, IL - New Home Star hosted its first-ever National GEM Run, a virtual 5K initiative in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Beginning in September, GEM Run participants started a six-week training program and were given the opportunity to run for dollars, with each mile logged being matched by a five dollar donation to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. At the end of October, participants were encouraged to partake in a 5K race, and upon completion, a bonus donation was given to the foundation. With the team’s help, New Home Star was able to raise $12,000, making this inaugural initiative an extreme success.

To stay true to the organization’s value of giving back in meaningful ways, the company created this new idea as a continuation of its Giving Every Moment (GEM) Project, a company-wide volunteer and service program. “Seeing individuals throughout the country come together for such a great cause was an inspiring sight,” says New Home Star Founder, David Rice. “Throughout the past several months, we’ve had to alter our ways of giving back as a result of the pandemic. It hasn’t been an easy feat, but seeing such a successful event play out where team members were very engaged and excited truly shows the dedicated and service-oriented nature of our national team,” says Rice. “It makes all the extra efforts worth it and has given the company even more ideas that we can continue implementing for years to come.” In addition, the organization hosted training sessions and provided resources leading up to the 5K to help participants stay motivated throughout the process, connect virtually, and move towards a common goal.

On October 25, GEM Run participants across the nation completed their 5K together virtually, running a combined total of 2,000 miles throughout the six-week period. “The most impactful part of this for me has been seeing everyone rally together for the cause,” explained Assistant Marketing Manager, Erin Lyons. “Participants were really able to work on their individual wellness while making an impact on others,” she said. The organization hopes to continue this initiative in the coming years to keep raising awareness and donations for breast cancer research.
